Liposuction Q & A
What is liposuction?
Liposuction is a surgical fat removal procedure available at Somerset Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery. Much like a vacuum cleaner for dirt on your carpet, liposuction uses a suctioning effect to whisk away unwanted fat from your body.
During a liposuction procedure, Dr. Clott makes a small incision in the area that you’re targeting and sticks a hollow tube, called a cannula, through the slit. He moves it around to loosen the fatty tissue in the area, then suctions the fat using a syringe or a vacuum.
After the procedure, your skin tightens and reforms itself against your new shape. As long as you have firm, elastic skin, you should look fully contoured and unscathed after you heal from the procedure.
What areas of my body can liposuction treat?
One of the features that make liposuction such a popular option for body reshaping is the fact that you can target nearly any area of your body with unwanted fat. Each person carries body fat differently, so while you might accumulate lots of fat on your upper arms, a friend of yours of the same weight might have a slimmer upper body with lots of fat in the buttocks and thighs.
Dr. Clott aims to make your body more proportionate by removing fat from your problematic areas and leaving the parts that you like as they are. You can choose to get liposuction in one or more of these areas:
- Abdomen
- Love handles
- Upper arms
- Thighs
- Calves
- Buttocks
- Back
- Face
- Neck
- Chest
Many of these fatty areas don’t respond to exercise and a healthy diet, no matter how hard you work to change your lifestyle. Fortunately, liposuction can combat even hormone-related fat and areas prone to accumulation because of your genetics.
Am I a good candidate for liposuction?
Although liposuction effectively removes small-to-medium pockets of fat from your body before your eyes, it isn’t an option for weight loss and shouldn’t be used as such. You should be at or near your goal weight or weight range before undergoing liposuction safely. Other terms that may make you a candidate for liposuction are:
- Having no life-threatening conditions
- Being a nonsmoker
- Being optimistic
- Having realistic expectations
- Being able to take time off work to heal
Dr. Clott gives you thorough instructions for how to prepare for your surgery once he decides that you’re a good candidate. Following these instructions sets you up for a successful surgery and a smooth healing period.
