Obstetrics Q & A

What is an obstetrician?

An obstetrician focuses on yours and your baby’s health while you are pregnant. Prenatal care, ultrasounds, and screening tests, including genetic screening and counseling, are all part of obstetrics care. If you’re thinking about getting pregnant, Dr. Clott can help you get in the best possible shape to carry a baby.

Labor and childbirth, as well as any health problems you may encounter after childbirth, are also in her scope of obstetrics practice. If you’re thinking about getting pregnant, or just found out that you are or might be, schedule an appointment with Dr. Clott to get started with quality obstetrics care.

What is prenatal care?

Prenatal care supports you and your baby’s health during your baby’s development. Prenatal care involves:

  • Regular checkups to review the health of both you and your baby
  • Nutritional support, including recommendations as to prenatal vitamins
  • Exercise recommendations appropriate to your fitness level and condition
  • Tests to evaluate your baby’s growth process
  • Evaluations of health conditions, such as high blood pressure
  • Determination as to whether you’re at risk for a complication

You should call Dr. Clott as soon as you suspect you’re pregnant. For a normal pregnancy, you’ll visit her once per month for the first 28 weeks. These visits increase to twice per month weeks 28-36 and move to once per week in weeks 36-birth. If you have a high-risk pregnancy, you may need more frequent visits to ensure your pregnancy is on track.

What kind of care will I receive after giving birth?

Postnatal visits are another essential part of obstetrics care. After you give birth, Dr. Clott meets with you several times. She ensures your body is healing and answers any questions you may have. She’ll check your body to make sure you’re doing OK physically and mentally. If you have questions about breastfeeding, she can also help. If any new health problems arise, Dr. Clott can help you get the care you need to feel better.
